What would have happened if Katniss did not win the Games, and never came back to Prim, or What would have happened if Katniss did not volunteer? Luckily in The Hunger Games Katniss does win for District 12 and gets back home to Prim. In Suzanne Collin’s The Hunger Games, Katniss is the main character while also being the narrator of the story. She is shown to be emotionally detach and straight forward. Her main goal throughout The Hunger Games was to survive win for herself, Prim, and Rue.

In The Hunger Games there always has to be one survivor. This does not include the rule change that is added later in the chapters. Katniss motivation that is seen throughout is her trying to survive the Games. She strives to win for her sister Prim, since when they were sitting in the room before Katniss had to leave for the capitol Prim told her she believes she can win by saying, “Maybe you can win.” (Collins 36). While on the train and right before she goes into the arena Haymitch tells her to, “Stay alive” (Collins 56 & 139). This makes her have a mental note that he has been through this before and any advice that he gives about the Games would be useful. While in the game Katniss tries her best to hide and survive to be the last one standing (151). She knows that it is not a smart idea to be a straight up killer and to be an attack only when needed kind of person. The whole time after she volunteered she wanted to show she not weak and an easy target (23). Letting her show that she stands her ground, she blows up the Careers food, hit the Careers with tracker jackers, and disrespected the Capitol. Her final motivation that helps complete her goal is her own motivation to win the Hunger
