In the play The Crucible by playwright Arthur Miller takes place in Salem, Massachusetts 1692. The play is based on the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. As puritans are being accused of witch craft, these big accusations come with deadly consequences to many civilians. These accusations started when Abigail Williams and her friends got caught dancing in the woods doing witch craft. Being the minister’s niece, she takes matter into her own hands in order to save herself from being hanged. She comes to the conclusion that the best way to do so is by accusing others of being seen with the devil, including the protagonist John Proctor. Proctor ends up being hanged for false accusations along with other innocent souls. Although Proctor was faced with the choice to lie and spare his life, he decided it was best to die a man of his word and save his name. Although his situation was different, he brought his death on himself. Corey was brought into the trial because he had confessed to Reverend Hale, the witch expert, that his wife had been reading books. “Last night-mark this-I tried and tried and could not say my prayers. And then she close her book and walks out of the house, and suddenly –mark this- I could pray again” (pg 846). Corey’s wife is now being accused of witch craft because of the small remark he had told the reverend. Upset with result of this accusation, he sides with Proctor to save his wife. Corey finds evidence that Thomas Putnam used the witchcraft accusations to his benefit, buy the land of those hanged. The plan backfires when he would not name where he got his evidence from. The court forces him to confess by pressing him with stones. Corey courageously dies because he know he did nothing wrong. When Proctor heard the news of Corey’s death he repeated Corey’s last words “more weight” knowing he had courage to protect
