The Namesake is a book written by Jhumpa Lahiri that won many awards such as the Time magazine best fiction book and the L.A Time magazine. Jhumpa lahiri was born in July 11, 1967 in London,England.Her parents where bengali which is the reason why She writes books that illuminate mostly the immigrant experience from the east Indians. One of her famous book that illustrates the indian immigrant experience is called The Namesake. The story follow a main protagonist by the name of Gogol Ganguli. In the beginning we get to see the story from the perspective of Ashima and Ashoke Ganguli. Ashoke and Ashima both had an arranged marriage because of their traditions. Although their marriage was arranged, they were still drawn to each other because of their curiosity. When Gogol starts getting older, he is a very American type of teenager which his parents would not approve. When he is older, Gogol decides to change his name to Nikhil. An example of that would be in chapter 9, page 219 which states “They would have preferred a sit-down dinner, jazz played during the reception, black-and-white photographs, keeping things small. But their parents insist on inviting close to three hundred people, and serving Indian food, and providing easy parking for all the guest(Lahiri 219).” This quote displays how Gogol’s and Moushumi’s parents take over their wedding because of the tradition. Another quote to support the topic sentence is “I’m saying hurry up and finish your degree. And then, impulsively, admitting it for the first time: I’m saying I don’t want to raise Gogol alone in this country. It’s not right.
