In the story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, Mathilde was a character whom was never happy with her life, she was greedy and always wanted more than what she had. One day Mathilde borrowed a necklace from her friend, Madame Forestier, for a ball and it ends up missing. After losing the necklace Mathilde and her husband’s life turned upside down. They lied to her friend saying the clasp broke and it was being fixed, and Mathilde and her husband went into debt trying to borrow the money to buy a new necklace to replace the lost one. Mathilde kept wondering, “What would life have been like if she had not lost the necklace? Who knows? Who knows? Life is so peculiar, so uncertain. How little a thing is takes to destroy you or to save you.”
