In the short story “The Necklace” the main character Madame Mathilde Loisel shows self pity on herself because she doesn’t live a luxury lifestyle as she so truly desires. Mathilde is so blinded by a particular lifestyle Living a fine life in her community was a must to live in their society. The stories theme reflects that Mathilde is not associated with the wealthy social class but she tries her best to make her life seem not the same as how it truly is. I think Madame Mathilde is an extremely selfish individual who wants to live a luxury life to the point where she will do anything in her power to live that life. In reality, she lives a poor life with her husband who is a simple person. Mrs. Loisel takes her husband for granted, especially when she loses Madame Forestier diamond necklace. Loisel showed she had multiple personality traits during the story. A strong personality trait she had through out the story was that she was excessively materialistic. Everything she needed and wanted was materialistic or upscale to keep up with the high social class. Madame Mathilde had a snotty attitude and was a spoiled brat. Even though she lived a basic lifestyle, she still felt as though she was apart of that higher class social circle. If she didn’t get her way she would start to cry and throw a temper tantrum until she got what she wanted. But Mathilde had a spilt personality. She can be snotty, but she can switch up and be that charming young lady in front of the higher class. Another personality trait she had was a glamour girl. Mathilde was genuinely into fashion and loved to get dolled up. She has expensive taste and admires fancy dinners and jewelry but she doesn’t have the funds to make her fantasies come true.
