In Guy de Maupassant’s mysterious, dramatic, fictional, short-story, “The Necklace”, Mme. Loisel is the self-conscience protagonist. She can “not afford fine clothes”. She sees what others have and she compares it to what she has. She is noticing what other people wear and its making her wonder if she looks bad. She calls her draperies ugly. How would she know that they are ugly? She analyzed her draperies and then analyzed her friends’ draperies to come to the conclusion that hers are ugly. Mme. Loisel believes her apartment is shabby. She would only think her apartment was shabby, by looking at other apartments and wishing that she has what her friends have. She shouldn’t care about what other people think about her.
