As the Christmas season rapidly approaches, pine trees are embellished with flashing lights and glittering ornaments, while wish lists are drafted as mothers scurry in a frantic attempt to catch the last minute sales. Yet through all the hustle and bustle the true meaning of Christmas has been lost, buried away under mountains of greed and desire. We are left with the idea that Christmas is about businesses and competitions versus the true meaning, which used to be love and happiness. Nowadays the excitement of Santa slowly slipping down the chimney and delivering a couple of meaningful gifts to “good” little girls and boys has been tainted by vicious businesses and grueling competition. The second the clock strikes midnight the day after Thanksgiving, advertisements consume the televisions, broadcast anything from a glossy BMW to a lay away deal. …show more content…

For example,back in the early 1900’s virtually everyone was facing hardship and families experienced either a great financial loss or long term unemployment. This painful time was known as the Great Depression. Occasionally the only thing the family could provide for their children as a gift on Christmas was home grown fruit. Fruits such as oranges, along with bananas and nuts, repleted the children's stockings on Christmas Day. If the child was fortunate enough they may receive a hand sewn bed sheet from their grandmother, but this was usually not the case. Despite being on the edge of poverty and receiving close to nothing for Christmas, these children still managed to be happy and to love their parents. These children understood the suffering and the sacrifice the parents had to make to provide for their families. In a time where the next meal was not guaranteed, advertisers also understood the challenging time.
