Obesity is one of the biggest health problems in America. There are many negative effects of obesity in today's society such as fast food restaurants, not enough exercise, poor eating habits and large portions. However, obesity can definitely be avoided and decreased. Ways obesity can be decreased is by promoting and educating people, especially children, about healthy eating habits, providing public policies that allow easy access to healthy, low-fat, high-fiber foods, trained healthcare professionals.
First, in order to stop obesity, we need to advertise healthy plates, instead of advertising a lot of fast food restaurants. Only one in 3 children are physically active everyday. And as stated before, habit the develop during childhood are usually carried out into adulthood. Less than 5% of adults participate in 30 minutes of physical activity each day and only one in three adults receive the recommended amount of physical activity each week. Only 35 – 44% of adults 75 years or older are physically active, and 28-34% of adults ages 65-74 are physically active. With minimal exercise and a poor diet, obesity is bound to happen eventually.
In all obesity is that over 78 million U.S. adults and about 12.5 million children are obese. The amount of adults who are obese have more than Doubled in 40 years. The way to defeat obesity is to teach people about their health and make sure children grow up with healthy eating habits to bring into adulthood and pass it down to younger generations. Another way is to have public policies to change the prices of healthy and unhealthy foods to make healthy foods more affordable for low income families.
