War on Terror The Taliban is one of the most well-known insurgencies/rebellions today. What has given them their big name today? Let’s take a look into where the Taliban originated and who they grew to be, what they believe they are fighting for, positive effects they caused in Afghanistan, negative effects they caused in Afghanistan, and where they stand today. The Taliban originated in an Islamic school in Afghanistan. It was created by Mullah Mohammad Omar. Omar remained the leader until his death via American air strike in 2013 (James, 1). Omar served in the Mujahedeen. The Mujahedeen was a militia that fought against the Soviet Union when it took over Afghanistan in 1979. However, as time passed by they wanted power to turn their country into a very strict Islamic state (Park, 1). They claimed through several interviews that they have been fighting for their country, but if they were to obtain total power over the country, they would inforce very strict and violent policies. For instance, people found guilty of murder and adultery would be executed publicly, and people guilty of theft would have their hand amputated. Their radical ideas and violent policies scared the public and turned out to be more a threat than help. Soon enough, the Taliban grew to be an insurgency. They served as a militia from 1994-1996, then, from 1996-2001, they took over parts of Afghanistan’s government, and finally, they have been an insurgency since …show more content…

There was war going on everywhere. Men and women were scared to walk around without a gun or any sort of protection (Real Stories). Also, if you come into contact with any Afghanistan government officials, you have to report them straight to the Taliban. IF someone finds out that you’ve come into contact with an official, and you didn’t report it, you and the official would both be killed (Real Stories). The Taliban has had positive effects also. It lowered the growth of people, which in that case was a good thing (Masud, 1). The population was growing and growing, and that was causing all of the poverty. Also, many non-irrigation projects were taken into effect (Masud, 1). After all, the Taliban wasn’t such a bad government. Although, the Taliban did have many restrictions. They didn’t want their citizens to think they were free to do whatever they wanted. They required the women to wear burkas. Burkas are “clothes” that cover everything on a woman’s body, except for some mesh at the eye so they can see. They believe that they should not see a woman’s body, so they wouldn’t be tempted to do anything to it. They also require a man to grow a beard, for no specific reason.
