All throughout history the arts have been a method of sharing and passing down stories or events to the next generation. The use of photography has enabled society to capture memories and remember significant events forever. Although millions of photographs exist, there are always certain photographs that stick out to the public and become the face of a certain events. “Iraqi Girl at Checkpoint” by Chris Hondros and “Alan Kurdi” by Nilufer Demir are considered two of the most influential photographs taken because of their emotional impact. One photograph is of a young Iraqi girl at a checkpoint in 2005 after her parents were killed. In Figure 1, the potential audience could be the general public in order to raise awareness about the war in Iraq. This could also target a specific group of people, such as those involved in politics, so that they can see the results of warfare and the damage it does. The purpose of this photo could also be to shed light on the tragic events happening in Iraq and how innocent civilians are being affected. This photograph could now raise potential criticisms towards the U.S. military and how they are carrying out their checkpoint procedures. U.S. soldiers killed this young girl’s parents because they believed their car was carrying insurgents or had suicide bombers. This young girl, along with her siblings, is now an orphan because of a horrific accident, and this photograph depicts this misfortune. Figure 2 also has a target audience and purpose, but it differs slightly from Figure 1. Figure 2 also deals with war, but it deals with the refugees and their struggles surrounding war and terrorism in their own homelands. The purpose behind this photograph is to reveal the hardships refugees go through and all the potential risks involved with fleeing their homeland. This picture shows the harsh reality that many refugees go through, and by a little boy being pictured, it creates a whirlwind of emotions because no one wants to see children in pain or dying. The target audience in this picture is the general public, but it could potentially target those who can’t understand the desperation and fear a refugee goes through. Especially during this point in time in the U.S. many Americans are seen as intolerant towards refugees. This picture could target those individuals and help them become more empathetic and understanding towards this situation.
