There are very few people who like bees, and many people around the world have a negative opinion of the honey bee. There are many factors that contribute to this popular opinion. Some of the reasons that people have a poor opinion of bees are due to the fact that they are allergic to them, are afraid of them, or simply find their presence annoying or irritating. However, while most people have negative feelings towards honey bees, there are many characteristics of them that make their existence essential to our way of life. It is important for people to consider how valuable honey bees are, and that they recognize that honey bees are not just a nuisance. Honey bees are an important species, because they play a crucial role in food production. The best example of the important role honey bees play is in pollination. Pollination is extremely important because it is one of the necessary steps in crop growth and development. Without honey bees, there would be a drastic decline in the production of crops and the revenue that those crops bring. Due to the relationship between crop yield and its revenue, honey bees are also an extremely important element in the world’s economy, as well as its food supply. Dr. John P. Holdren, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, writes, “Honey bee pollination alone adds more than $15 billion in value to agricultural crops each year, and helps ensure that our diets include ample fruits, nuts, and vegetables.” This means that honey bees are an indispensable resource. Without the honey bee there would be a dramatic decrease in the circulation of money, which could have a detrimental effect on the economy. This means that honey bees play a significant part in people’s daily lives, and they will be directly affected by the loss of the honey bee population. There are several actions in which the government can take towards solving this pressing issue. One is increasing the amount of funding towards the Pollinator Research Action Plan. This is a plan that was established in the year 2015 to help minimize the decline of honey bee loss. Funding is an important factor that needs to be addressed in current programs, if we expect to see any improvement in the bee population. This is because according to the Pollinator Research Action Plan, “Financial arrangements are obviously important partnerships for science, as research needs typically outnumber funding resources” (54). This in turn limits the amount of testing and research these programs are performing to help increase the bee population, and find out the main reason behind the mysterious Colony Collapse Disorder. We can see that this is the current case with the Pollinator Research Action Plan, due to the fact that the plan itself notes, “The Action Plan contains elements that have received appropriations, as well as some that require additional funding to address. Completion of the latter is contingent on Federal budgeting outcomes” (5). Seeing as the funding is not necessarily stable towards the program, it puts the program at risk for being removed from the federal budget, during budget cuts. The current programs, needs a steady form of funding, that does not rely on the
