Michael Ende’s book The Never Ending Story depicts a young boy who discovers a book of the same name. The boy, by the name of Bastian Balthazar Bux, becomes attached to the book and is even able some relate to some of the people in the book. In a way the book mirrors some of the people that can be considered dear to Bastian. In both the book and Bastian’s life, many of the characters serve vital roles that shape many of Bastian thoughts, feelings, and actions. Bastian’s many issues in the real world aloud him to relate to the characters and some of the obstacles they went through in the story. This is best seen during his encounter with Falkor suggesting that he should give up the emblem. His reaction to it and the fact that he fought even the idea of release it shows his attachment to it. In his mind because Moon Child gave it specifically to him no one should dare try and take it from him. His attachment to it can stem from the fact many other things that have been important to him have only been in his life for temporary lapses. The two were both in possession of the emblem for extended periods of time. One (Bastian) allowed for the power to consume him and was very close to completely losing himself in the end. The other (Atreyu) had control of the power but never allowed it to control him. He understood that yes he had this power but his mission was a lot more important than his own desires. Bastian thought about himself first while Atreyu put Fantastica first. The two are similar in backgrounds as well. Both are extremely young children without real parental figures. Bastian’s father is still alive but isn’t really involved in his life. The book never even mentions Atreyu parents or how he came to existence. All we know is that he is essentially a little boy with a lot of confidence and courage There are people who can never go to Fantastica, said Mr. Coreander and others who can, but who stay there forever.
