The New Deal was a program made for three purposes which were relief, recovery, and reform. Theodore Roosevelt was the one that started the New Deal to make things better again after the stock market crash that occurred in the 1920’s which hurt the economy severely. Women, Men, and children saw their life savings vanish in a blink of an eye in the bank. They would have to ask for clothes and money and somehow make it work with whatever they had. They lost their homes, hopes, and dignity with the income went down and the jobs closed. Although, many saw the New Deal as being a new way of success many also criticized and were opposed. He ended up forming the National Union for Social Justice to lobby for his goals. Charles Coughlin was for the New Deal, but he opposed it when Theodore Roosevelt was not instituting his economic reforms. Francis Townsend was another person who opposed, and he opposed because he thought that people who were sixty and up should get two hundred a month to be financed by two percent of sales tax. Townsend as stated in the book “wanted to relief the elderly, open jobs for the unemployed, and stimulate economic recovery” (Goldfield 580). Lastly, Huey P. Long was another individual who opposed on Theodore Roosevelts New Deal. Long organized the Share-Our-Wealth Society and wanted to end poverty and unemployment with having confiscated tax from the rich. He wanted everyone to live well and he thought that by getting tax from the rich he would be helping the poor tremendously. He wanted to provide every family with a decent amount of income and have the children have their education as well as for the families to have health
