“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6, New King James Version). The responsibility for raising a child and instilling within that child all the necessary skills, knowledge, a value etc, needed to be a valuable contributing citizen primarily rests with the parents. However, once a child is school age they spent the majority of their waking day in the hands of educators. Therefore, schools and educators have taken on the role of instilling character and values. Within the text of The Night by Elie Weisel, the main character of the story faced challenges that occurred in an historical timeline that our students have very little understanding or connection to. Topics for research included Adolf Hitler, Holocaust, Jewish Ghetto, World War 2, Concentration camp, and other topics chosen by the teacher to provide further background. The collaborative group formations allow students to work together and aid each other in building the knowledge they need to encompass the background information needed (Holder, Whetstone & Sheinker, 2008).
