The Norton Introduction To Literature by Kelly J. Mays is a book comprised of several different narratives. These narratives all had their own uniqueness to them, but shared certain themes. The Anthology is a compendium of various works by different authors. This book helped us learn about the many different elements of literature that are used throughout these stories. Of the numerous elements taught to us throughout the book, the narration, symbolism, and conflict helped make comparing and contrasting these three stories easier. These three elements were prominent parts of these three stories The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket, I Love You to Want Me, and The Jewelry. When we read fiction, our sense of who is telling us the story is as important as what happens (pg 169). The narration of I Love You to Want Me and The Jewelry are both third-person limited narration and The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket is first-person narration. Even though The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket seems like it could be a third-person point-of-view, it's not. The narrator in the story is telling it from an outside perspective, but in the way it makes him remember the type of love he felt and let go. Narration helps reveal more than just who is talking; it helps the reader visualize and focus on what is occurring. You may think What is the difference between third-person limited narration and first-person narration? Well third-person limited is when the story uses a narrator who only has access to one character s perspective and feelings. First-person narration is when it comes from the person in the story, telling the story from their point of view.
