Romare Bearden’s painting The Family portrays a scene of a family who are in a negative situation. They are being visited by two unwelcome guest late at night this can be seen from the body language given by the father and mother as it implies that the topic is a negative one. The family is caught in a scene at the moment of the meeting going hostile. The family is painted with a somber tone with solid colors giving leaving the painting with a feeling of anticipation that something is going to happen. The Family gives a bleak view into a moment of a family being threatened which the colors and body language leave a lasting feeling of unease will the symbolism of the objects paint a picture of what happen before this moment.
They first created a nursery that is all technology and can only work with the children’s imagination. This then starts to cause brain damage to them when they use it for the wrong purposes in the nursery. His next personification example written into the story is, “the house is wife and mother now, and nursemaid.” This example paints a picture of how much technology is in the entire house not just the nursery. None of the members of the family do anything for themselves.
In the vignette “The Monkey Garden”, Cisneros continues the theme of losing one’s innocence through imagery. Being one of the last vignettes, the reader knows the struggles like losing one’s innocence and feeling shameful that Esperanza continues to experience throughout the novel. Cisneros continues these themes when Sally is quite willingly tricked into kissing a couple of friends. Esperanza attempts to come to her rescue; however, Sally doesn’t want to be saved. Since Sally has completely thrown away her innocence by this point, Esperanza in turn feels shameful because of her still abundant innocence.
Normally, a house with young children is usually a vibrant and loud setting with the expectation of a mother who is without a break in order to tend to their every need. However, this mother’s world appears to be at a standstill or even perhaps at a breaking point as described in this section: “Sometimes there were things to watch-- the pinched armor of a vanished cricket, a floating maple leaf,” (8-10). She is most likely searching for ways to see her way out of her current situation or to fantasize a world where she can be at peace. She tries to focus on the simplicities of life such as the “floating maple leaf” (8). This mostly due to her hopes that life would slow down for a moment and so she could find some peace as well.
The Power of Obsession In The Veldt, Bradbury shows an addiction problem. The nursery is the obsessive object, and Peter and Wendy are the obsessed. When the parents try to take away the nursery, Peter traps them in, and it kills them.
In this place we see that people created a "nursery", which is an advanced virtual reality program, that is able to create any environment that is in the owner 's mind. Furthermore, as the children are addicted to the nursery, the parents started to know that something isn’t right. Instead of successfully moving away to a new resident, the children killed their parents by visualising the scene of their parents being killed by the wild lions of Africa so much that they become real. In this text the author shows us how the technology can remove people’s sympathy towards each other. We can also imply from the children that they have lost the ability to love as they are more willing to spend their life in the nursery than living with their parents.
When the children are threatened with the change of the nursery being turned off they willingly harm their own parents. In conclusion, the theme of “The Veldt” is people are scared of change because the actions of the characters support the
In “The Veldt”, Ray Bradbury focused deeply on foreshadowing to predict the parents death at the end. In the story there is a room that makes it look like whatever the children think. The technology takes over the kids and the parents try to win them back. The parents battle over the kids they lose to the nursery and their life. He uses Foreshadowing till the bitter end started very early on in the story.
“They live for the nursery” announces Lydia, frightened by the truthful thought (Bradbury 2). It is hard to admit painful truths, but Lydia manages to. She is, unfortunately, too late in her wake up call. The children already have a lot of “death thoughts” while in The Nursery(Bradbury 3).. It is sadly ironic that a place like the Nursery, meant to foster creativity, has the complete opposite effect on Wendy and Peter.
Early in the story, we see the kids getting everything they want beginning to develop when the parents walked to the nursery to see if there was something wrong with it. They saw that they were in Africa, surrounded by animals that looked very real. In the distance, there were lions eating a bloody animal. “( The nursery) had cost half again as much as the rest of the house. "But nothing 's too good for our children," George had said.”
For example, consistently throughout the film and story, the children control their parents through the nursery and tell them when they will be coming home, where they are, and what they are doing. “At dinner they ate alone, for Wendy and Peter were at a special plastic carnival across town and had televised home to say they'd be late.” The children, Wendy and Peter, are constantly thinking about and threatening their parents through the veldt and the actions of the lions. In the end, we see this sense of control, become domination as the kids take out their parents. In addition, in the film and story, from the beginning Lydia suggests that there is an issue and throughout the story is the driving factor of the therapist, the vacation idea, and the shutdown of the nursery.
The people in the book couldn’t handle major emotions if they were introduced to them. One emotion that they are not familiar with is loss, this dystopia explains death as “release.” The population is raised to believe that people just disappear or go away. While these citizens do not know it, people are actually euthanized. “As he continued to watch, the newchild, no longer crying, moved his arms and legs in a jerking motion.

These Gothic elements typically include gruesome or violent incidents, characters in psychological or physical torment, and strong language full of dangerous meanings. Oates herself is citied as saying that "Horror is a fact of life. As a writer, I’m fascinated by all facets of life". “Where is Here?" This story is sort of eerie and tells the tale of a grown-up man who goes back to visit his childhood home.
The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a short story told through diary entries of a woman who suffers from postpartum depression. The narrator, whose name is never mentioned, becomes obsessed with the ugly yellow wallpaper in the summer home her husband rented for them. While at the home the Narrator studies the wallpaper and starts to believe there is a woman in the wallpaper. Her obsession with the wallpaper slowly makes her mental state deteriorate. Throughout The Yellow Wallpaper Charlotte Perkins Gilman uses many literary devices such as symbolism, personification and imagery to help convey her message and get it across to the reader.
Part B: Comparison The study of childhood being an important and character-shaping portion of one’s life that is set completely apart from the other phases of life is a relatively new interest within western societies (Plastow, 2014). The theorist Philippe Aries argued that in the middle ages there was no such thing as childhood, and that children were treated as adults both legally and in employment (Cunningham, 2014). The many varying sociological, technological and economic changes in the last two centuries has enacted a shift in the definition and experiences of what is it to be a child (Arthur et al, 2015). In this modern era, it is paramount to understand the reasons why we need to view and comprehend the composition and significance of childhood.
