The Oasis By James Halliday: Character Analysis

READY, SET, GO! In the year 2044, when the Earth is in chaos there isn’t many place that people can hide or go to enjoy themselves. James Halliday created a game that is called Oasis. The Oasis is a virtual reality world where people can be anyone and live any kind of live they want. At the end of Halliday’s years, he sent out a message to all Oasis’s users that there is an easter egg hidden somewhere in the Oasis. Whoever able to find the egg will inherit his entire fortune. There are a few main characters but the protagonist is Wade Watts, or he more commonly known as Parzival. Even though it might not seem like Wade Watts is the hero, but he is a true hero.

To start off, Wade got his name because his father thinks it is fitting. Wade mentions, “My mom once told me that my dad had given me an alliterative name, Wade Watts, because he thought it sounded like the secret identity of a superhero. Like Peter Parker or Clark Kent. He revealed that a van is his hideout by stating “The van was my refuge. My Batcave… It was where I attended school, did my homework, and played videogames ”(Cline 25). Most heroes have something similar to this.Some examples are that Superman has his Fortress of Solitude and obviously Batman has his Batcave. These places are special since only the heroes know where it is located. Which is great especially when a villain want to destroy the heroes’ homes, they can just go to their hideout. In the story when Sorrento is about to kill Wade, thinking that Wade is at his aunt’s home, but in fact he is not. Wade notes that “He had to be bluffing. And even if he wasn’t, he didn’t know that I was actually half a mile away, in my hideout. Sorrento assumed that one of the glowing thermal outlines on the display was me” (Cline 142).
