To begin, the October Revolution acted as a precursor to the Guatemalan Spring. The people of Guatemala endured over 60 years of rule by dictators that appealed to the minority elite. The country was under military leadership that served elite landowners. The Guatemalan Spring ended dictatorship rule of President Jorge Ubico. President Ubico suppressed all communist and radical nationalist groups and acted as a proxy leader for the United States government (Skidmore & Smith). This led to the 1944 ‘October Revolution’ to bring about social equality. Through the democratic process, Juan Jose Arévalo became President of Guatemala in 1945 thus beginning the Guatemalan Spring.
