The Character of Lancelot In book three of The Once and Future King, Lancelot was the protagonist. He was the best knight of King Arthur’s round table. Even during his younger years people recognized the fact that Lancelot was quite unfortunate looking. “the boy’s face was as ugly as a monster’s in the King’s menagerie. He looked like an African ape”(317). All throughout his life he felt as if something was wrong with him, as if there was something missing inside of him. His world turned around the day he met King Arthur and he asked him to join his round table when he was old enough. For 3 years Lancelot trained to become the best knight Arthur would have. He worked nonstop, along with his studies, to be the best for Arthur that he could be. Lancelot’s feelings got hurt when Arthur started the Round Table and forgot to invite Lancelot to join. He decided he would make his way over there on his own, and Arthur was delighted to see him when he arrived. Over the time that Lancelot spent being the best knight in the world, he allowed his apprehensive feelings to push away the people closest to him and create conflict within himself. He was always gone on quests, just to get away from the temptation of Jenny, when he should have been there for his best friend. If Arthur ever accepted the fact that Jenny was cheating on him with Lancelot, they wouldn’t be able to maintain the friendship that they had. Lancelot knew what risk he was taking when he slept with Jenny. He could lose the friendship of his one really good friend. Lancelot tries so hard to make everyone else around him happy, before dealing with his own happiness. Although, more often than not he makes decisions based on his own selfishness, causing nothing to go right for him. He ends up unhappy and in turn pushes the people he loves away from
