The Death in both “The Open Boat” and “To Build a Fire” are caused by the environment. But in “The Open Boat” The Oiler death is ironic because, he is the strongest of the four men that where presented and therefore should have survived. He works hard while rowing the boat, diligently keeping the men safe from the waves. As stated “The oiler was ahead in the race. He was swimming strongly and rapidly.”(Crane 221).
