A large majority of books use many types of literary elements and devices. An example of a literary device is imagery; the five senses. This is one of the most descriptive types of writing as it conveys what the character is feeling or smelling. It’s a more human way of writing in some ways. In the book Fahrenheit 451, the character Montag has a large amount of internal struggle throughout the book.
The novel, Cold Mountain, by Charles Frazier demonstrates literary fiction more than commercial fiction. The characters, particularly Stobrod, Ruby and Inman, are round and complex. They have more to them than what meets the eye, and as the novel unfolds their true thoughts, feelings and actions are revealed. Each has his or her own internal conflicts that they deal with, realistically showing that life is full of disappointments and struggles. Stobrod is one of the more complex characters in Cold Mountain.
In the book An Invisible Thread, the author often provides examples of parents that have a poor quality of parenting. First there is Laura’s father Nunziato Carino, who’s a bartender. After he is done with his shift, he would often come home drunk and yell at his son, Frank who is Five. Frank will quickly hide under his bed sheet as his father dammed his name again and again. This happened frequently and every one would hide in their rooms as unfortunate Frank takes his father’s heavy word beating each night.
Edwidge Danticat is a Haitian author who wrote the books create dangerously and creek crack. Both books deal with similar topics such as martyrs, diaspora, and the power of literacy. Martyrs of the Duvalier regime were often executed. Others were forced into exile. Many people who were attacked under the Duvalier regime were educated people.

Jing-Mei’s mother had left China to come to America after losing her family, and had been raising Jing-Mei in America with her second husband. Despite her mother’s grand hopes for Jing-Mei to become successful in America by becoming a child prodigy, Jing-Mei did not share the same opinions.

With the identity of everyone being a mixture of intrepid experiences and lessons we often forget that our origins are the base of who we are. Concepts like this are reasons that when reading the memoirs The Glass Castle and The Distance Between Us two characters showed incredible similarities in their identities. The two characters that resonate together are the fathers of both authors Rex Walls, Jeannette’s father, and Reyna’s father, Papi. Rex and Pai are comparable in their neglect of their children and the effect they had on their children. Primarily Reyna and Jeannette’s fathers share a relatable relationship with their children.
In Joyce Carol Oates’s short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” the main protagonist finds herself in a very hostile situation. With an all most fateful encounter with a man known as Arnold Friend. Forcing her to choose whether to run off with him or taking her by force. This man known as Arnold Friend to the reader comes off as almost a demon. A person who uses many temptations, word play, and threats to take advantage of the young protagonist Connie.
The author’s message about kindness vs. bullying, been kindness to other people, they would respect you back. But, bullying to others does not work out with others because you don’t respect others and they would not respect you back. The thematic idea of kindness vs. bullying is shown in the novel Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli when Leo, Stargirl, and others show us the importance of been kindness and bullying through Stargirl’s act of kindness and Leo and others been rude behind Stargirl’s back. Stargirl’s act of kindness impacted Leo and the whole school proves the theme with kindness vs. bullying because she wanted to be an outsider.

“The Veldt”, by Ray Bradbury, is a short story that contains a series of events where the children, Wendy and Peter, are constantly being spoiled with the use of technology. Their parents, George and Lydia, bought a technology filled house, which contains devices that do almost everything for them, including a nursery for the children. The nursery’s walls transform and display different environments, of which reflect one’s thoughts. The children, however, are caught using violent content inside the nursery so their parents threaten to take away all technology, including the nursery. The children become upset, throw temper tantrums, and end up locking their parents in the nursery, left there to die with hungry lions.

In the novel, The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas uses the conflict, setting, and point of view to show her main message; racism comes in many shapes and forms. The protagonist, Starr Carter, faces various conflicts throughout the novel, and overcomes them in unique and outstanding ways.
Literary Analysis- Little Brother Have you ever been held against your will? In the book Little Brother by Cory Doctorow, the main character, Marcus, and his friends are held illegally in a prison on an island because they are accused of being a part of a terrorist attack on the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, California. Marcus being held against his will the first time at Treasure Island , the kids illegal rock concert, and people's personal privacy being invaded are catalysts to Marcus wanting to make a change in the authority of the Department of Homeland Security.
From middle school to where I am in high school, analyzing literature was one of the almost important aspects of English, however I was not exposed as many strategies as I expected to be. I have known critical analysis as “reading between the lines”, looking for a deeper meaning behind the text. I always believed that analyzing literature was the hardest part of English, and sometimes I could spend hours on just one question that involves it. When I was first introduced to critical analysis, I thought it meant to summarize the plot of a story, or the main idea of a passage. Overtime, I learned that there are underlying themes and messages hidden throughout the texts that we must discover using clues the author gives us.
