School. It’s the place we go to learn, to meet new people to get and education. We spend a minimum of 12 years at school, not including the years some people spend in college. If we’ve been in school for such a long period of time, getting an education, it must have made some sort of impact in life, right? The Other Wes Moore proves this point by giving insight of two different people with the same name and completely different life outcomes. One who strayed from education, and one who stuck with it and eventually accomplished great things. Education was very crucial to the outcome of both of their lives because it helped Wes become an author and the lack of education among other things led the other Wes to jail and overall was just a big factor of how their lives would play out.
From the beginning of the book, it was told how important education was to the author’s family. This was proven by the quote, “My mother decided soon after our move to the Bronx that I was not going to public school. She wasn’t a snob, she was scared.” They were living in a drug infested area and his mother wanted to ensure his education so she went to the lengths that she could to make sure that Wes got one. He was always surrounded by violence and drugs, his own brother was a well known drug dealer. Although, Tony was a source of encouragement for Wes and often gave him lectures on taking education seriously, “Tony was enraged. “Yo, you need to take this shit seriously, man. Acting stupid ain’t cool’” Wes continuously ignored Tony’s warnings and continued to slack and skip school. Eventually, Wes got involved in the drug game in desperation for extra money. Not wanting to be discovered by his mother, he told her that he was making all of the money off of DJing. Tony didn’t believe the story so easily and knew what Wes was really up to. Tony was tired of giving advice and tired of being ignored, he had finally given up on Wes, “”If you won’t listen, that’s on you. You have potential to do so much more, go so much further. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink, right?”” Wes’ academics didn’t improve and he had started to spend most of his school mornings on the street corner making drug deals. He missed school regularly and stopped going completely when his first child was born.
