Hinton never uses the word "outsider" in her novel, yet it 's the title of the book. Maybe she left it open for us to ponder. Write an essay in which you explain what she may have meant by The Outsiders. If you live in Stone Canyon your are labeled ‘popular’. But what does that matter? It won’t matter in 30 years, wheather you were popular or not. It wont matter how your hair looked, how nice your clothes are, if you always had the nicest shoes, or if you were ‘up to date’ with the idiosyncrasies of everybody at school. It won’t matter where you shopped at the mall. It will matter who you hung out with because those people shape your future. By now I could’ve met the love of my life and who I’m gonna marry. Now the way girls are treated way different. They get to pick who their boyfriend is. Back in the 50’s ypung women were territory. But, in the 8th grade you don’t need a boyfriend. It’s not like girls are going to get married in 9th grade. Right now dating is just for breaking up. Dating is for getting married which I don’t think 13 year old girls are going to do anytime soon. An outsider could also be one that stands out in a crowd. Another word for outsider is ‘outlander’ which means a foreigner or an alien.
