The Outsiders: Book vs. Movie The Outsiders (Book): “Innocence is like polished armor; it adorns and defends.” Robert South. The Outsiders was written by S.C. Hinton and it is a junior novel. (Movie): “Innocence is one of the most exciting things in the world.” Eartha Kitt. The Outsiders: the movie was written/directed by Francis Ford Coppola and it is a historical fiction. The book and the movie have many similarities and differences, but the two story’s explain the intriguing tale of the boys. The book and the movie both start out with Ponyboy writing in his schoolbook saying “When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home.” A lot of the text in both the book and the movie is repeated for example at the park when Ponyboy is telling the socs. off.
