Everyone will lose someone in their life, that's what happened to Ponyboy and his brothers. They lost what is most valuable to people, parents. When Ponyboy’s Older brother Darry steps in as the parental figure he can be very protective. Part of being proactive mean being rough, caring and being different than the other greasers to set a good example for pony and soda. The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, is an empowering novel full of courage and epicness, with a pinch of sorrow and sadness. It tells the story of a gang of Greasers that are there for each other through the good and bad. Darry gets rough and strict when ponyboy slips up, Darry also has a soft side and cares about his brothers, and he is definitely different from the rest of the gang. Part of being protective of his brothers, Darry must be tough to tell them he is in charge. My proof that darry can be rough is in chapter 3 on page 50 it states “I said I didn’t mean to…” “I didn’t mean to” Darry shouted, and I almost shook… That's all I hear out of you!”. Then in paragraph 3 it also says “Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door.” This shows that Darry is rough because when he started to yelling at Pony, Pony got scared. On page 175 it states “Ponyboy, you don't think enough, you realize all Darry’s giving up just to give you a chance he missed out on. He could have stuck you in a home somewhere and worked his way through college.”. As you just read Darry had a lot of potentials, so if he was like any of the other selfish Greasers, he would not have taken care of Ponyboy. But Darry is not like the others, he does want Ponyboy to succeed in life. When Darry shows Ponyboy that he is different, it does change
