The song “Firework” by Katy Perry connects to the novel The Outsiders written by S.E Hinton in many different ways. The Outsiders is not only a book about a young boy and his life long friends, but displays the idea that everyone goes through hard times. One needs to push through upcoming hardships because in the end there is always a good outcome for many individuals. Ponyboy knows this better than anyone considering he hasn’t had the easiest life given. Although it’s not easy for him, he pushes through the battles life throws at him. They are known to be Greasers, “Greasers are almost like hoods” (page 3). They are lower on the social scale and many times have been compared by their enemies the Socs, “...the West-side rich kids” (page 2). In the song “Firework”, Katy Perry says, “You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine. Just own the night like the 4th of July”. This determines that even though one might be diverse or stand out from a group of people, one never should be ashamed of the differences between them and society’s standards. Many Greasers don’t have a lot of money, drive the best cars, get the best girls, chances to go to college, and have a loving and supportive family life; that does not make them any less of an individual. The Greasers wear their hair long, put grease in their hair, and “...have a gang fight once in a while”(page 3). They embrace their unique characteristics even if it is different from the Socs.
