“Get smart and nothing can touch you.” Pg171 of The Outsiders. The Outsiders is a fictional story set in the 1950’s in Oklahoma, based on two different rival groups, the Greasers and the Socs. Each group is located on opposite sides of the town. The story opens up with Ponyboy Curtis, the main character walking out of the movie theater and soon after getting jumped by the Socs. While getting jumped, the Greasers jump in and save Ponyboy from the Socs. The Greasers consist of Darry and Sodapop Curtis, Steve Randle, Keith “Two-Bit” Matthews, Dallas “Dally” Winston, and Johnny Cade while the Socs consist of Sherri “Cherry” Valance, Bob Sheldon, Randy Anderson, and Marcia. To begin with, all the characters are the same in both the film and the novel. The characters' ages stay consistent along with the locations presented in both versions. Another similarity between the two are the rising actions. In the rising action, Johnny murders Bob with a blade, resulting in the death of Bob. Then after, in both the novel and the film, Johnny and Ponyboy find Dally. Dally gives them what they need and sends them off to Jay Mountain in Windrixville. Additionally, the climax in both the novel and the film is the same. Both Johnny and Dally eventually die for the same causes in the novel and the film.
