Outsiders & Outcasts Is being an outsider lonely and hurtful, or is it beneficial in the future? Rihanna was left out as a kid because of how she looked (Abadi 2017). She now has multiple Grammy’s and recently performed in the 2023 Superbowl. In the essay, “Isn’t Everyone a Little Bit Weird?” the author goes into detail about how Benjamin Franklin was different from others in his childhood and how it benefited him in his future. Love, Hate, and Other Filters is a novel by Samira Ahmed who follows an Indian teenage girl named Maya. Maya wants to live her own life that is very different from the one her mother wants her to live. With that being said, “The Doll’s House” by Katherine Mansfield demonstrates the idea of not physically being different from peers, but financially. The Kelveys were excluded from the rest of their classmates and were treated differently because of their social class. In the story, the Kelveys’ classmates made fun of them because the Kelveys were mostly shunned (Mansfield 205). Our Else and Lil Kelvey were both outsiders because they were poor. Everyone was rude to them and treated them poorly. They were often excluded from things because of their financial status, which they could not control. Even others that are not as poor as the Kelveys but not the same as their peers can be an outsider whether they physically look like it or not. Furthermore, Pat Mora displayed people who were outsiders financially in her poem “Fences”. The narrator lived at a tourist-filled resort with her family who worked there. The narrator shared an experience, “Once my little sister ran barefoot across the hot sand for a taste. My mother roared like the ocean” (Mora 14). Presumably, the narrator only kept the beach neat and clean and was not allowed to enjoy it. They were not tourists who had money. Her mother knew their standing which explains why she got mad. They were the people who were overlooked and left alone. In short, the experience of being an outsider is common. It can happen to anyone, for anything.
