The Outsiders was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and originally novelised by S. E. Hinton. Allows us as viewers to be introduced to the struggle of social groups co-existing in a town only big enough for one of them. F. Coppola utilises many stylistic devices to tell the story from the point of view of the Greasers, focusing on our main Greaser Ponyboy Curtis. Ponyboy is just like any other greaser who comes from the rundown section of the city, yet he doesn’t fit the average characteristics of the Greasers.
Ponyboy Curtis throughout the movie depicts exceptional growth as a character, in the audience’s eyes going from a young greaser to a young hero. The director Francis Ford Coppola uses the positioning of the characters to portray this concept, the first time we see this is at 14:30-20:20. Greaser members, Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade are shown being in between the Greasers, Dallas Winston and Keith Mathews, and behind the socials Sherri Valance and Marcia, and then when the Greasers are acting on their lust Ponyboy is seen as the light of the scene and the Greasers are in the dark. Allowing yourself to make your own ideals could change your life, sitting in a crowd and only following the ideals of others is a sad way to live, according to an article from Dove in their Self-Esteem project they state that individuality leads to happiness. This can be linked to Ponyboy's view on life, so if more people act with the values of Ponyboy it would lead to a happier society. A happier society leads to a healthier society, proving that even though these were ideals of someone in a movie from 1983, the way he lives is still relevant in
