The Outsiders by S.E. Hilton is a novel written by a teenager for teenagers and therefore is perfect for a year 12 reading list. This story of rebellion, identity and peer pressure revolves around two rival gangs of teenagers, the lower-class Greasers and the more popular, rich Socs. This division between the two groups is the centerpiece of the book and brings about its main theme, the class divide and “fitting in”. Despite having been written in 1965 by a 15 year old girl this novel still holds up today and maintains its smoothness of writing. The story covers one week of the Greaser’s lives and you get to know the characters so well through reading that this fact is hard to believe, making this book hard to put down. The Outsiders is a
