The Outsiders, a novel written by S.E. Hinton, is a novel full of choices. Choices are what life is based upon. If no one made decisions, then our whole world wouldn't develop. This novel is full of choices that change each character's life for better or for worse. A young boy named Ponyboy is a greaser, and he is in a gang with his two brothers, Darry and Soda, and friends. They always stick together and care for each other, but they have rivals. The Socs. Johnny went to go find the football so he could practice a few kicks. As he’s searching a blue Mustang pulls beside him. Outcomes 4 Socs. The Socs then went on to beat Johnny up senseless, but it wasn’t just that they had beaten him half to death. In these events, Johnny became scared, they had threatened him and he could do nothing about it. After those events, Johnny didn’t ever stand up for himself. He even started carrying a switchblade. “But after the night of the beating. Johnny was jumpier than ever. I didn’t think he’d ever get over it. Johnny never walked by himself after that.And Johnny the most law abiding of us all, now carried in his back pocket a six- inch switchblade.” (34). When Ponyboy and Johnny started hanging out with a Soc girl the Socs got real mad. So when Johnny and Ponyboy were hanging out at the park late at night the Socs came and jumped them. They started drowning Ponyboy and Johnny didn’t know what to do. He was scared so he did the only thing he could, he stabbed Bob, the leader of the gang of Socs. He didn’t want to kill him, but if he didn’t Ponyboy would have died. When Johnny killed Bob he started talking to Ponyboy on why he did it.“His voice wavered slightly.’I had to. They might have killed you. And they had a blade...they were gonna beat me up….’ ” (57). He was scared because he had been beaten up before by the Socs and it scarred him emotionally. Ponyboy and Johnny run to Dally afterward to get advice and he tells them to go to Jay Mt. and camp out for a few months. Everyone is worried about Johnny and Ponyboy. They had a rough time surviving and were starving. “ I hadn’t eaten anything all day, and smoking on an empty stomach doesn’t make you feel great” (79).
