The Outsiders In this essay, I will be discussing my personal favorite book I've ever read, The Outsiders, first introduced to me by my 7th grade teacher as a class reading. The Outsiders is about Ponyboy Curtis, a 14-year-old boy who is struggling with what right and wrong is in his society. This novel is my favorite because the author S.E Hinton wrote about someone (Ponyboy) who feels out of place in their society and who struggles with their identity which most I believe can relate to at some point in their life. The Outsiders takes place in Tulsa Oklahoma in the1960s and is based on two rivalry groups the greasers and the socs. The greasers are lower class and are the protagonists in The Outsiders consisting of the main characters (Ponyboy, Johnny, Dallas, sodapop and more) and the Socs which are a group of rich teenagers who have no boundaries and are the rivals of the greasers (Cherry, Bob, Randy, Marcia and more). In their society they have grown to there being two paths in life that you are born into and have no say in the matter. In the novel Ponyboy questions their lives and why that cannot change that. Although all of the greasers have their own issues they’re all connected by being the misfits of the town and as to why they feel and identify as outsiders. The struggles shown consist of being homeless, committing murder, bullying, alcolholism and more. All things that are very real and problems in society even today.
