The name of the book is The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing: Traitor to the Nation, Volume One: The POX Party. M.T. Anderson is the author of this novel. The book was published in 2006. This novel is about the eighteenth century when a slave, named Octavian Nothing, is kidnapped from Africa and is made part of a college experiment, and realizes how inhumane slavery is. This novel is a part of the POX Party series. The POX Party has a very interesting relationship to the author’s career because he writes children’s books and try’s to use languages which children can understand. M.T. Anderson wrote this book to help the teenagers living in today’s economy understand how it might have been if they were to be raised in the eighteenth century. …show more content…

Anderson had a goal to relate to young adults, and or teenagers while writing the POX Party. Set aside from his normal children’s books that he usually writes he decided to branch out and connect to young adults. While he tried his hardest to use the language from the eighteenth century, he still tried to relate and connect with today’s young adults and used many interesting literary devices while writing. One of the literary devices that I noticed M.T. Anderson used was bildungsroman. Bildungsroman is used when the plot is based on the overall growth of the character. In this case, it was used to show that Octavian continues to get smarter and smarter. Octavian then realizes that what is going on around him is very inhumane which leads to his escape. Another literary device that Anderson used is euphemism. Euphemism is used in a storyline to lessen the abrasive and negative description. In this story, euphemism is used when Octavian realizes the inhumane things that are done to black people around him. Octavian realizes that black people are slaves to the white people, and are put in the metal masks so that they cannot talk. Octavian also finds a book that shows all of the brutal things the white people due to the slaves such as slice their archeries tendons so that they couldn’t walk.
