The past is behind us, but some people wish it wasn't, Gatsby is one of those people. In the novel “The Great Gatsby” written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, we learn that the past should stay in the past through Gatsby’s lover Daisy, and seeing the effects of loving her. Gatsby had a vivid past but wishes to relive it, and that's his downfall. Gatsby’s past is a wild one, but his love for Daisy is a crucial part of his story. Gatsby and Daisy dated before he went off to war, during the 5 years he was gone Daisy married Tom. “He talked a lot about the past, and I gathered that he wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy”(Fitzgerald 110). Gatsby wants Daisy to love him again. While they had a thing 5 years ago, neither of them seem to realize that opening a past fling while one person is already married is not going to end well. Gatsby has been missing her for 5 years, but Daisy moved on to Tom. Gatsby thinks Daisy only ever loved him. Daisy moved on, while Gatsby stayed the same. “‘Oh, you want too much!’ she cried to Gatsby. ‘I love you now’ – isn’t that enough? I can’t help what’s past.’ She began to sob helplessly. ‘I did love him once-but I loved you too’”(Fitzgerald 132). Gatsby is trying to get Daisy to say she never loved Tom, but it’s just not true, she did love him. Daisy loved Gatsby in the past and now same with Tom. Bringing up the past always makes life more complicated. Daisy and Tom had a good life, they had a daughter, and more than enough money. The day Gatsby comes into things, the days start to get more complicated. Complicated can mean many things, but for our story it means making daily decisions. These daily decisions will completely change the way his life goes, when Tom and Gatsby fight, Gatsby and Daisy leave
