More often than not, producers and directors have a tendency of exaggerating history in order to make extraordinary movies. These exceptional movies cause viewers to root for the hero and hold grudges against the villain. As a result, the movies’ depiction of the main character and that character’s enemies slips into a typical misconception of what truly happened in history. Movies such as The Patriot and The Alamo effectively follow this model. Although they make extremely great movies, these movies are also making inaccurate history. In the movie The Patriot, Benjamin Martin is portrayed as a peaceful man of principle while his enemy, known as Colonel William Tavington, is shown as a remorseless and bloodthirsty character. In the scene when Colonel Tavington arrives at Benjamin’s farm, the dark cinematic music of the movie makes the viewer associate the British as the “bad” guys. Assuming that The Patriot is chronicled from a British perspective, the Americans that aren’t loyal to the crown will be depicted as the evil ones. This movie will show how Americans start an atrocious and merciless war. If it weren’t for them, hundred thousands of lives would be spared. Furthermore, Benjamin Martin will be identified as a realistic version of Francis Marion. Francis Marion, besides being a military officer, is a criminal who rapes his women slaves and kills Native Americans for no reason. Similarly, if the roles are reversed in The Alamo, the Mexicans and Santa Ana will be the martyrs, while the rebel Texans are their relentless enemies. In this new movie, Mexicans are defending their own territory from people who want to take it away from them.
