Good fortune and prosperity graces some individuals. Some cherish the opportunity, while others falter. In The Pearl, a novel by John Steinbeck, Kino and his family are presented with a magnificent pearl. Kino and his village are indigent and heavily discriminated upon by their neighboring village. When Kino is presented with the pearl, he is offered an opportunity to escape the tumultuous environment he and his ancestors have always endured. However, the pearl incites more harm than comfort. Kino’s son, Coyotito, ends up getting caught in the firing line and Kino loses everything he cares for. Ray Rice is a professional American football who last played for the Baltimore Ravens. His career was headed for greatness until February of 2014. This is when a video documenting Rice’s assault of then fiancee was released to the public. However, at this time he still realises that that the pearl is only a tool he can use to help better the life of Coyotito. One example of this is when Kino is at home gazing into the pearl. “Kino looked into his pearl… ‘We will be married - in the church’... ‘We will have new clothes’... ‘A rifle’, he said. ‘Perhaps a rifle’... ‘My son will go to school,’” (Steinbeck 24-25). Here, Kino dreams about all the things he can acquire after selling the pearl. However, at this time he also dreams of sending Coyotito to school. This shows that although Kino is beginning to want other things outside of helping his son, that is still one of his main goals. In one of the first nights after Kino obtains the pearl, Kino is attacked by intruders who were presumably looking to steal the pearl. During the attack, Kino shows how protective he is of the pearl when he cuts and injures one of the attackers. This event agains shows how Kino want to keep and utilise his precious
