As Rachel Hawthorne once said “Deception may give us what we want for the present but it will always take it away in the end.” In the short novel The Pearl By John Steinbeck, there are many themes presented like the theme that things are not always what they appear to be also know as the theme of deception. This quote shows how if you try to be deceitful you may get what you want at one point but in the end it will most likely vanish.The short novel is about how Kino our protagonist, who finds the pearl of the world. While Kino undergoes many difficulties such as how people keep lying and deceiving him Kino does fight back but he ends up hurting many people. The first example of this is when Kino’s brother says “It is the pearl said Juan Tomas there is a devil in this Pearl”(23). This is said when Kino’s house is burned down because someone wanted the pearl. Another example is right after Kino found the pearl the narrator said “So that he became curiously every man’s enemy”(64). Now Kino has become very unfortunate because if every man wants his pearl people will do anything to get. The third example is at the very end “And Kino drew back his arm and flung the Pearl with all his might”(89-90). Kino through away his own pearl because he could not handle all the bad luck and misfortune. This pearl has made Kino hurt and kill the ones he loved.
The theme of Illusion vs. Reality is present to us in many different ways, such as the doctor, the mountains, and the pearl. The doctor was a cruel and greedy, while he should have been kind and caring. The mountains was place that brought death upon them. And the pearl gave nothing but trouble.
