The doctor demanded. “No, they never have any money. I, I alone in the world am supposed to work for nothing—and I am tired of it” (Steinbeck 11). This quote helps to show the doctor is in fact a very greedy human being. The effects of greed however, are not confined to the doctor. The pursuing trackers exhibit the effects of greed. The trackers show they are greedy by trying to hunt down Kino and his family, when the trackers find out about the pearl. The trackers also only have the intent of finding Kino and his family, Killing them, stealing the pearl, and then profiting. However the effects of greed are also not always a direct correlation, but sometimes and indirect effect. The untimely death of Kino’s son, Coyotio, is ultimately a result of greed. Kino fleeing from his community and catching the attention of the trackers, ends up costing Kino’s son, Coyotito, his life. The trackers with a horse and rifle shows that the trackers have power and that they will win. Kino with his little power he has tries to fight off the trackers, but ends up losing.
