During the experiment the hydrochloric acid donated its hydrogen ions in the reaction and then the chloride ions reacted with the zinc ions in the solution. Thus, the zinc dissolved in the highly acidic solution which was caused by the high concentration of H2 ions. Hydrogen gas was generated during the reaction which was seen when bubbles were formed as the penny was dissolved into the beaker.

In the article “Is My Penny Solid Copper or a Copper-Plated Zinc Cent,” the writer states, “If your… penny has a date before 1982, it is made of 95% copper. If the date is 1983 or later, it is made of 97.5% zinc”(Bucki).The difference in composition has an effect on price, as copper is worth more than zinc. Since the U.S. Mint has began the production of pennies, over 1.65 trillion pennies have been made for circulation.
Around the world, there are billions of pennies and every single one of them has basically the same format, shape, and size. The penny is usually the smallest denomination within our currency system. People around the world uses pennies to help buy things that humans would need to have in life. Without the existence of pennies, it would make our currency become worse and less organized also it could really drop our market economy or just the economy itself. In general, pennies doesn’t actually get dirty; the copper used for pennies is made up mainly of copper atoms.
That is why I am supporting the retirement of the pennies. With me supporting the retirement of the penny I have some evidence on why the penny should be retired. One piece I have is in the article it states that it costs 11 million dollars to make pennies in other countries. That it is a lot of money being used even though the penny doesn’t really get used, it just gets pushed to the side and never gets used. They could be doing more with the 11 million dollars.
700 million dollars isn 't worth the one cent piece, we could be using this money on charity or something else important. Though the penny has been part of the U.S for more than a hundred years, it should not be minted anymore because of the high production cost and other countries such as canada don 't even bother using them at all. People argue that the penny should stay because of its long time and history with the US, but what they don 't know is that the penny cost more than 2.4 cents per penny. “The US Mints budget in 2010 was 27.4 million dollars in penny production”(source 1). The time wasted counting money could add up to over 700 million dollars, this money could be spent on something important.
As stated in the text,”In truth, it is more than a coin—it is a piece of American culture.” Even though the penny has some culture, culture is nothing compared to losing money the losing money part is way more important than just being part of American culture. This shows how people can hold onto the smallest things for the dumbest reasons. Another thing stated in the text was,”Still, for many people, the penny's sentimental value remains the same.” Even though the penny may have some sentimental value the government is losing a ton of money minting new pennies because they cost more than they have in value.

Pennies should not be made anymore. Pennies should not be produced anymore because they aren’t worth having,society doesn’t want them and think they are a nuisance, the only people who want to keep them are the big banks and the government. Things were complicated considering that each colony had its own currency, and there wasn’t a “set in stone” currency used throughout the colonies. During the American Revolution, there wasn’t very much paper money given by the Colonial Government. So coins or species were used instead of paper money, but since England was in control Colonists began to become scarce of coins. The cause of the inflation was related to taxes and the lack of money in Colonial America. When trade, processing, and small scale were brought into the equation the issue escalated.

The complete waste of time and money spent producing these pennies just to be forgotten in the couch cushions is astounding. If every penny is 1.8 cents to produce than the government is giving away 800 million USD every single year. The same article says, “...10 million new useless items punched out by government workers who could be more usefully employed tracking counterfeiters.” In other words, the government isn’t only wasting money on penny production but, also a working staff. U.S. currency could be more protected if it wasn’t for the pesky penny.
