Does humanity have too much conflict in the world due to indifference? What will the legacy of the 20th century be, and what had the most impact on it? In the speech “The Perils of Indifference” given by Elie Wiesel, he explains how we as a country overcame many obstacles but have yet to know what the legacy is. Indifference plays a major role in society, and is something we don’t want to overpower our world. Indifference has taught us many lessons, but can we learn from them? Can we show or bring light to this manor in a professional way that explains it the best we can? These are the major questions that are explained in three different ways all showing examples of the impact indifference had on the world. In the first paragraph, Wiesel uses rhetorical questions to get the attention of the readers. Wiesel says, “We are on the threshold of a new country, a new millennium. What will the legacy of this vanishing century be? How will it be remembered in the new millennium?” He asks questions that make people really think deeply about how or if the millennium will be remembered in a good or bad way. The fact that he was able to first hand witness and experience indifference by surviving the holocaust is inspiring. Wiesel explains how “during the darkest of times, inside the ghettos and death we felt abandoned, forgotten. All of us did.” The audience feels more intrigued, and is able to trust what he has to say due to the fact he’s experienced indifference, and it was a very traumatic part of his life. By using ethos appeal, this increases his credibility, and makes the audience want to hear more. Although indifference can be very dangerous, Wiesel begins to explain how good things have happened in this century. By using a counter argument, it shows Wiesel knows a lot about this topic, which also makes him more
