According to Merrium Webster it says that mental health means “the general condition of one's mental and emotional state”. In the book “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky a key part of the book is Charlie’s mental health. It reveals real world problems with mental health such as self destruction, trauma, and grief. In “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” we start off with the narrator Charlie and he gives us insight on his life. The book with Charlie having to dealing with two deaths, his friend Michel in a suicide and his Aunt Helen in a car crash. He starts to experiment with drugs and becomes addicted. “After a week of not talking to anyone, I finally called Bob. [...] He said he had a quarter ounce of pot left. So, I took some of my Easter money and bought it. I've been smoking it all the time since” (Chbosky 139). This quote illustrates how Charlie has gotten to a place of desperation that he spends his Easter money on drugs. After reflecting upon how he lost his innocence seems to not care anymore. This introduces us to how people may have gotten into self destructive behaviors such as Charlie. As we see, Charlie has gotten addicted to marihuana due to his friends being gone. And relects the possible risk factors that Charlie has put on himself. “We utilized the latent class analysis to determine clustering of health risk behaviors (alcohol binge drinking, cigarette/marijuana use, insufficient physical activity, and fruit/vegetable consumption), and chi-square and ANOVA analyses to examine associations between the class membership and mental health (mental health diagnoses, psychological symptoms, and self-injurious thoughts/behaviors). Or just not be aware that you do exist” (Chbosky 94). This reflects upon how Charlie is more reserved and should get some support. Because of how he just wants to sleep for a thousand years. Which is quite like dying Charlie seems to not be in the most mentally stable place. This argues the link between Charlie with his poor mental health and schools facing poor mental health.
