It is fascinating how the human mind can come up with many ideas of the birth of the world. In the story of The World on a Turtle’s Back there is mention that in the beginning there was no world, or land; but there was a great ocean and above it a great void of air. That void of air was the Sky World where the story commences. Then there is The Four Creations and The Tohono O'odham Creation Story. All three of these have their similarities and the differences on how the world was built.
Long ago, people wondered about how we, as people, came to the Earth. Story-tellers would go around the villages and tell amazing stories about how the Earth, humans, and life were created. Many myths came from these oral stories. Three of these myths that were created are called The Earth on Turtle's Back from the Onondaga tribe, When Grizzlies Walked Upright from the Modoc tribe, and the Navajo Origin Legend from the Navajo tribe. All three of the myths play an important role on if there is a higher power, how we view the world was created, and beliefs on how other creatures and forces helped create what we believe in.
Throughout history, many different people have wondered how life on Earth started. Different cultures came up with many different ideas on how life was created and used these ideas to create stories. Today we call these stories origin myths. The Native Americans had many different origin myths. Almost every tribe had their own individual story.
The Navajo and the Modoc: Mythological comparison In the myths “When Grizzlies Walked Upright” and “The Navajo Origin Legend”, we get a glimpse of the beliefs of traditional Native American societies. The former myth is one told by the Modoc tribe of Oregon, the other is told by the Navajo tribe of the American Southwest. The different uses of animals, spirits, and women’s roles help create an illustration of society before colonization. These myths do also differ on these themes and on how they are presented.

Nobody knows the origins of the world was based on two Native American Tribes that focuses the life of the Iroquois and Choctaw. In the Iroquois creation story, “The World on The Turtle’s Back” before the starting point of time, the universe did not have anything; no animals, no humans, nor land in sight. The woman who lives the Sky-World along with her husband removed the roots from the Great Tree which rests on her to fall into the ocean but was saved by animals below Sky-World. In the Choctaw creation story, “Grandmother Spider Steals the Fire” The Great Spirit brought people below the ground to see if there is anything in the dark, but there were no planets or stars.
How the World Uniquely Begins Native American myths and the Christian Bible both offer stories about how the world began.. In “The Earth on Turtle’s Back” and Genesis 1, both tales have similar values and ideas. These two stories compare in that both tell the importance of water, the fact that Earth came out of the water, and the existence of supreme beings; in contrast, each story has a unique idea of how the world came into being. “The Earth on Turtle’s Back,” a story from the Onondaga tribe, an original Native American group, is a myth which relates a story about the beginning of the world. Water is below the Skyland and it becomes an issue when the Great Tree is uprooted.
Each every creation myth is unique in its own way. Of course, creation myths have their similarities, but each of them has at least one detail that separates them from every other myth. The question is how those similarities came about, considering for some of these groups that didn’t even know that each other existed. It would have nearly impossible and extremely unlikely for them to communicate with each other let alone, share their stories with each other. Yet, despite this there are some extremely common themes and events throughout these myths.
In various cultures, traditional stories of a universal beginning relate to the beliefs and rituals that are prevalent within that society. Although these creation stories differ among cultures, all display similar characteristics which constitute archetypal settings of creation myths, such as a great tree, the landmass from a watery chaos, and the fall of man. In the Iroquois’ creation myth, “The World on the Turtle’s Back”, the display of archetypal settings parallels the creation depicted in the book of Genesis, but underlying each similarity are differing interpretations which allow for the stories to relate to its specific culture. In both “The World on the Turtle’s Back” and the Genesis creation story, a prominent characteristic is the great tree connecting heaven and earth.

Scott Momaday discuss two different creation myths. “The World on The Turtles Back” is an Iroquois legend that has been passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth, making it an oral tradition. A creation myth is a traditional story that involves supernatural beings or events that explain how the some aspect of human nature or the natural world came to be. These myths have comparable aspects that are specifically the roles of men, women, animals, and nature.
Gaia Creation Story The Story about Gaia is a creation story because in the story Gaia is one of the first titans. A creation myth is a narrative that explains how people first came to inhabit the earth. This titan was the personification of the earth and gave birth asexually to repopulate the rest of the earth. The story attempts to explain how the world began. The creation myth starts off with someone named Gaia, it tells the reader that she came from the abyss and was the fountain of it all, the Earth.
There are hundreds of motifs scattered throughout the world about many vastly different creation myths. There are some myths linked with only a few motifs, and they originated from the same continent. Then there are also myths which originated from the other side of the world and share so many motifs one would think they were just a hundred miles away. With so many different motifs, it remains unclear and unproven as to how so many different cultures can share the same theory about how Earth and humans were created. Although there are so many fascinating motifs about the creation of the world and everything on it, I believe these three are the most common motifs shared by creation myths: nothingness (chaos) in the beginning of time, humans

The story “The World on the Turtle’s Back” told by the Iroquois Indians is a story of how the world came to be and the good and evils in the world. The story “The Way to Rainy Mountain“ by Scott Momaday, is a story of about the Kiowa traditions and the way that they lived. Both of these stories show how important it is to respect the gods. “The World on the Turtle’s Back” is a myth about a man and a woman that lived in the sky world.
Have you ever wondered how Native Americans believe the world came to be? Both stories include the elements that make the world balanced. The stories “World on the Turtle's Back” and “The Menominee” both include the importance of nature and animals. Also, their beliefs on what makes things good and evil. Finally, they include how the gods created man, woman, and earth.
“How the World Was Made” presents few examples of these ways of life in an unusual setting. In the story, when the animals were finally able to live on the new earth, the absence of the sun left them in the dark. The animals set the sun on a track to go around the earth; this track however held the sun too close. “It was too hot this way, and… the Red Crawfish, had his shell scorched a bright red, so that his meat was spoiled; and the Cherokee do not eat it.” (“How the World”).
