In 1996, Sandra Cisneros bought a house in the historic King William neighborhood of San Antonio, Texas. She made improvements to her home and painted it purple to reflect her Tejano heritage. However, her neighbors felt that the purple did not abide by the housing regulations of the neighborhood and petitioned the local commission to force Cisneros to change the color. I believe Sandra Cisneros should be able to keep her house purple.

The main conflict is that Julia’s sister Olga has recently passed away, so Julia struggles with her mental health, depression and grieving, and the stress of schooling additionally with her home life and close relationships. Olga, the ideal daughter took care of the family and remained nearby.

During the early twentieth century, the United States underwent a great amount of growth and expansion as a result of the ongoing Industrial Revolution. Throughout the Industrial Revolution, the United States experienced a shift from being a largely agrarian society to being an industrial one. Mass production in factories, as opposed to goods being mainly produced by individuals, became the norm, and this greatly transformed the lives of working-class Americans. Cities became places of high job availability and opportunity, and as a result, many Americans moved from their farms to the cities to find work in one of the many factories. Being a black woman raised in a white world, Ann Petry was familiar with the contrast in lives of African Americans and whites (McKenzie 615). The Street, centered in 1940’s Harlem, details these differences. While Petry consistently portrays Harlem as dark and dirty, she portrays the all-white neighborhoods of Connecticut as light and clean. The novel was first published at 1984 and had an award of the American book award. The main character Esperanza moves to a new house on Mango street and despises it. Esperanza desires to leave her neighborhood because she does not like poor areas where there are racists separated .
On September 11, 2001, tragedy struck the city of New York. On that fateful day, two airplanes were hijacked by terrorists and flew straight into the twin towers. Each tower fell completely to the ground, taking thousands of lives with it and injuring thousands more. Not only did that day leave thousands of families without their loved ones, it also left an entire city and an entire country to deal with the aftermath of the destruction.
