The short story "The Pink Hat" by Caroline Bond Day and the poem "Immigrants" by Pat Mora show the reader how important it is to be yourself. Each author develops the theme "Be Yourself" through their respective works. No matter where life takes you be yourself. In "The Pink Hat" by Caroline Bond Day, about a colored woman who could hide her race. She used a pink hat to hide her identity. Where ever she went people would be kind and generous to her when she would usually be yelled at or hated. "I would be comforted with a hot drink at the same soda fountain where ordinarily I would be hissed at."(page 71) That is a quote from "The Pink Hat"
