Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons is a heartwarming and emotionally intense novel. After Ellen’s mother’s intentional suicide, Ellen is lost in the world. She wants to become part of a family that will truly care for her. Her father is an alcoholic who constantly beats her; this treatment is the cause of Ellen’s disappearance from her own home. Many family members take her in but no one actually accepts her. She eventually finds the Foster Lady who adopts her and provides good treatment for her. The plot of this novel (as stated) is an interesting one. It’s one that makes you stand on your feet when you read it. The plot is combined through intense emotions, and persistent actions that give it meaning. Gibbons was able to pursue a well thought out plot that allow her readers to connect with her main character. The climax of the novel is when Ellen is kicked out of Nadine’s house. There was one main character, and about 4 other characters that were needed to completely satisfy the plot. Our main character, Ellen, was portrayed as a persistently determinate young lady. This main quality that she held allowed her to overcome her hardships. It also allowed her to survive in the many households she was forced to be in. She had one goal, to be part of a well-known foster home, and she stopped at nothing until she reached her goal. Ellen acted as a role model for many, especially young girls. She never gave up, and the readers of the novel were pleased with this characteristic. Ellen showed many that if you set your mind to something, no matter what, you can reach your goal. Lesser important characters like Julia, Ellen’s father, Ellen’s grandmother and Ellen’s aunt, were just people who provided hardships to Ellen. These hardships encouraged her to truly strive for her goal and reach it. These characters developed Ellen’s essence once she had reached her final
