Title: The title Grass gives summer vibes of laying on the cold grass as the sun beats down on the surface. The poem sounds bright and refreshing, with a positive message laced in the poem.
Paraphrase:
Bodies are piled up at different battlegrounds. Bury them and let me grow.
The grass covers everything.
Pile more bodies in other war zones. Bury them and let me grow.
Over many years passengers ride the train and ask the conductor:
Where are we and where are you taking us?
I’m the grass and I will keep growing.
Connotation:

All locations are battlefields, all within approximately 100 years of each other. As the poem progresses, the lines reach a point when a new statement arrives, “Two years, ten years, and the passengers ask the conductor.” Just as that point is reached, it retreats back to the repetitive words from the grass, “I am the grass. Let me work.” The change of lines gives the impression that the attitude of the poem is more mindful, but then carries the same apathetic emotion.
Title: The title of this poem, Grass, means more than the plant in this writing. Grass is not a happy and mellow concept, but an explicit and shameless idea, that grass continues to grow, even as dead bodies are being piled upon it.
Theme: One of the largest motifs in the poem Grass is its mockery of human nature. The grass acts like the human race, for it constantly states that it is working, even when the bodies are being piled up in these different battlefields. Humans are always so busy working, to the point that violent actions such as war isn’t something that is proritized. In fact, many people choose to ignore it, or let it pass. However, the world is held witness to thousands violent actions, but many people seem to shut themselves out, but it doesn’t solve the issue.
