Every 4 years, Sophia stages a musical where a public audience gets to witness all the hidden talent of the studentalentn the form of theatre, dance and music. This year, our school staged the popular Broadway Musical – Hairspray, wtalent 800 girls displaying their talent and bringing alive the streets of Baltimore, America.

Hairspray tells the heartwarming story of Tracy Turnblad, a teenage girl from Baltimore who dreams of participating in the Corny Collins Show. When she wins a role in the program. Tracy, now a celebrity, is introduced to a number of colourful characters from different cultural and social backgrounds. Despite their differences, their shared love for music and dance brings them together.

Dancers trained under Choreographer Charles Ma who dedicated himself completely to the musical and made sure every step, beat and smile were in place. The choir was trained by Mr Abishek who was also the Director of the musical and ensured that the voices of over 50 girls in each cast were in perfect sync and pitch. The main cast, divided into Cast 1 and Cast 2, were under the guidance of Mrs Madhuri Jagadeesh and Mrs.Marina, Mrs Lali, Mrs Annette and Ms Krupa. Mrs Madhuri was able to bring the best out of us, whether it was modulating our voices, bringing out emotions and being able to become one with the character.Every practice session was looked forward to and both casts had the opportunity to learn immensely from each other. The students were assisted by a team of logistics and stage production who ensured everything went on smoothly, be it rotating the props or handling the mics and contributed towards the success of the musical. To bring alive the sounds of Baltimore and turn our stage into real Broadway were professional musicians Mrs Rebecca Colaco on the Piano, Mr Akshay Nagmule on the drums, Mr Chinglang Roman on bass guitar and Captain Ravi on saxophone. They were accompanied by our very own talented students – Kiara Quadros and Diya Pais on the keyboard.
