In 1858, President Lincoln wanted to end slavery, he wanted America to become one thing, or the other. Unfortunately, Southerns didn't agreed to Lincoln's decision, which is why Southern States seceded from the Union and later on caused the Civil War. The Civil War lasted from 1861 to 1865, causing many damages to both the North and South. However, Southern States were severely crippled after war, and southerners daily lives came to a half since the war caused the destruction of their homes and towns. All of this was very difficult for the South to recover since their economy was based on agriculture. They were in a bad condition. The South didn't have the power and resources necessary to recover. When the South seceded from the Union, it lasted for about four years, but the Reconstruction united them back together again and created as we now know, the United States. Another positive and successful aspect it happened, was the right to vote and speak no matter the race of the individual. The reconstruction protected the rights of everybody equally. Education was one of the other successful aspects done in the South, since it was provided for every single individual and it was forced, which we can still see today. The last but not least positive aspect the reconstruction did was creating the Freedmen's Bureau. However, it had it's failures and consequences too. When the reconstruction was created, many southerns weren't okay with it, which many them turned to terrorism and violence. They were known as the Ku Klux Klan, and this group of people would attack homes, schools, and churches of innocent people because they were racist towards African Americans. Another failure of the reconstruction were taxes. Although reconstruction was going to help the South, they needed to power to do it. Taxes were getting higher in order to take that money to help the South, but what was the failure is that many people needed that money for food, clothing, and shelters. Because of the taxes, the other failure was created, which was poverty. Southerners lost lands, homes, and needed food for their families.
