The Power Of Reputation Our society's perception of individuals makes them heroes, villains, or average. Julius Caesar by Shakespeare is a historical tragedy that follows the society of Ancient Rome after Caesar defeats Pompey and becomes the most powerful man in Rome. Julius Caesar explores the concepts of heroism, honor, noble, and what people are willing to do for power. The Most Handsome Drowned Man by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a children's short story about a large handsome corpse who washed up on the shore of an isolated village and began viewing him as a god. For example, “They compared him in secret to their men, thinking that they would not be able to do in a lifetime what that man was capable of in a single night,” The women of the island are not in an ideal situation. Stuck on an island that is falling apart with life-threatening weather in constant fear for their safety. Here comes someone who presents as a real bonafide hero. Though he never actually did any heroic actions. The women are so desperate for positive change that they are willing to feed themselves these false fantasies as truth. Esteban could have been brain-dead, weak, or murderous, but the idea of a magical hero that could save them in an instant is more powerful than any action he could’ve done. As shown, “Their houses would have wider doors, taller roofs, firmer floors, so that the memory of Esteban could walk everywhere without running into the crossbeams.”The image that the citizens created for Esteban was so strong it motivated and inspired them to improve the lives of their society for generations to come. If Esteban was truly alive he would be a burden, a giant man that would need assistance bathing along with taking up the majority of food and water resources. Estben gave the villagers motivation for decades to come; the legends of Esteban will inspire and inspire generations to come. All in all, Esteben's image improved the lives of the villagers much more than he as an individual ever
