The Lottery was a short story by Shirley Jackson published in 1948 and it appeared in The New Yorker and it is a magazine that has a lot of stuff in it. The village in the story has a bank and a post office. The village could be like our town because it has green grass and flowers. Every year they have a lottery. They think that The Lottery helps their crops grow .The people in the village gather in the square. The head of the household that had to draws a slip of paper out of the black box. Whoever has the black dot is the winner. The winners family has a to get put in the drawing. The people of the family have to draw a slip of paper.One of the papers has a black dot on it. The person of the family gets stoned to death and then they go on with there life. Hutchison family gets put in the drawing so they know who is going to get stoned to death. Tessie is the one that is going to get stoned to death and then they go back home for noon dinner. The central theme of The Lottery is the Power of tradition. So The Lottery has a strong tradition that hold a lot of power. The people of the village are selfish because they hold on to The Lottery.
