The ideas and concepts they have used are still looked at as the building blocks of today's society. The way they view art, trade, warfare and politics are still concepts that are used to justify how we think about how the world works. How has the Praetorian Edict influenced modern law concepts? One of these influential Roman legal concepts was their system known as the Praetorian Edict. The Praetorian Edict is a feature of the Ancient Roman law which had huge importance, The Praetor would be elected by a group of powerful people called the Comitia Centuriata, a collection of Rome’s most powerful and wealthy people above the age of 40 (Lendering, 2019). The Praetor was a powerful Roman judicial officer who had large authority within cases of equality between citizens, the praetor would be responsible to produce public games and would have authority within the government in the absence of important government consuls. Later within Roman society a second Praetor would be elected to take care of cases involving foreigners. The number of praetors would vary based on the views of the emperor at the time. The most praetors at one time occurred under the rule of the consul Lucius Cornelius Sulla, where there were 8 concurrent praetors. In modern day society, both men and women are afforded equal rights today due to the ideas that were created by Jus Gentium. The theory that makes things fair and just. This theory helped create our ideas of civil rights and legal wills, which have influenced both civil and common law. How has our legal system differed from the ideas set forth in Ancient Rome? As much as Ancient Rome has influenced our legal system, there are still areas where our system has differed and innovated. The ancient Romans created the ideas of civil law that we see today. Their civil and legal court processes have influenced our modern-day legal system. There have been a few areas where the legal system has changed from the Roman legal system. Modern day society is very different from the times of Ancient Rome, and this is reflected in the changes in our legal system.
